Not all who wander are lost
Another roaming entry…
Real life… Drums in the Deep
When I was 18, I came home from college for Christmas break. I was dating a girl who worked at one of the local shopping centers and we had plans to go to lunch together. Her boss didn’t much like me and the feeling was mutual, so I was waiting in my car reading a book. My car wasn’t even turned on. The keys were in my pocket.
The story I was told was that there was a girl who had just come from the car lot. Her father had bought her a brand new sports car for Christmas and she was anxious to see how fast it would go. She lost it on some black ice and hit me in the driver’s side door at just under 90 mph. My car was literally cut in half. I went through the windshield and bounced along the parking lot and other cars for several hundred yards. I broke 40 some odd bones in my body and fractured my skull.
When I woke up in the hospital, Christmas and New Years had both come and gone.
As a part of the aftermath of that day, I get frequent and severe migraines… which are even worse when the weather changes. Right now, we are starting to get the first coolings of fall temperatures and my head feels like Neal Peart is playing his 12 minute YYZ drum solo on my mellon. It’s making me a bit snappish.
EQ2… Nor are they counted among the very wise.
I was trying to wrap up a few open quests that I have in Zek last night. I’m one of those people who simply does not like to delete a quest. I want to finish any that I take and I want to take any that are offered to me. As a result, many quests often grey out on me before I have them completed.
I had 2 in Zek that were green but that I knew would turn grey as soon as I leveled, so I was working on them first. The first quest was from the semi-crazy troll cook at the docks. He wanted me to go kill orc luggars and recover some stolen booze. The second was to recover an unused orc mining pick from within the mines. As the luggars run and roam near the mines, I figured I could bust them both out in short order.
I killed all of the luggars that were up and knew I had some time before they re-spawned, so I set off for the mine.
Assuming is a dangerous game… especially when you are assuming the elevator that takes you down the very long shaft into the mine will be at the top just because it always has been before.
Safe fall is nice… but it has limitations.
When I awoke in the Green Hood camp and began rebuffing myself after falling to my death, I noticed several NPC’s who wanted to give me some more quests. I hailed them each in turn only to discover that they were all for Deathfist Citadel. Now, I can’t solo there, but I do have an HQ or two for there that I am hoping to recruit some guild help to complete this weekend. Since the quests all intersected with the steps of the HQ, I went ahead and took them… only then realizing that my quest journal was once again completely full.
I sorted the journal by level to see which quests could be knocked out quickly. I found 2 for butcherblock that didn’t sound overly long, so I headed off that way. After completing those, I decided to see if I could knock out the 1 quest that I had for Steamfont. Of course, once there, I found the Gnomish Homeland Security mountain and many more quests… all of which sounded like more fun than some of the other Shattered Lands quests that I still had.
So, for only the second time, I found myself deleting quests from my journal… quests that seemed to be full of endless updates, rare spawns, and infrequent drops. They were all replaced by some quests for Steamfont.
Before I logged and went to bed for the night, I knocked out a couple of those Steamfont quests and realized, once again, what a fabulous job the developers did with the Faydwer expansion. Steamfont is not only an enjoyable zone, but the quests are all very well done.
Now, I just need to get me some new pants. I haven’t been using the appearance tab for my character, so I look like the biggest fashion blunder ever. The brass colored boots and the silver BP combined with the blood red pants make me look like I’m roaming the world in Spider Man PJ’s… which I wouldn’t mind if I could also have some web shooters to help me quit falling to my death.
