Gestalt Mind

Gamer geek no more?

I just had to laugh.

I was talking with a group of guys this morning.  Well, it was more that they were talking and I was smiling and nodding my head.  They were talking about their latest accomplisments in Rock Band.

One of them turned to me and asked, “How far have you gotten?”  I smiled and took a sip from my morning coffee… trying to buy some time.  Finally, I stammered, “I’ve never played it.”

After they passed around incredulous stares and snickers, one of them said, “Want to borrow it?”

Nervous now, I looked down at my shoes and said half under my breath, “I don’t have anything to play it on.”

One of them snorted.  “Sure you do.  It is available for both the 360 and the PS3… and we have it for both.”

I began a nervous shuffle backwards hoping to make a break for the exit.  All eyes turned to me as I muttered, “I don’t have either.”

The break room resounded with a collective, “WHAT?!?”

What came next was a chorus of overlapping questions like, “How can you not have either system?” and, “What decade are you living in?”  One disbelieving voice rose above the rest and declared, “Next you’ll be saying that you don’t even own a Wii.”

“Well…”

“You don’t even own a Wii?  What kind of a gamer are you?  What do you have?”

“Umm… I have an old PS1 and a Sega Genesis.”

Amidst the roaring laughter, I heard, “Those things still run?”  One particularly astonished guy said, “Let me guess… you still have an old CRT television that isn’t HD, don’t you?”

I may have to quit this world in shame.
