Happy Anniversary Everquest

It is really hard to believe that EQ is 9 years old now.  In some ways, 9 years doesn’t seem like that long of a time, but when you really stop and look at it, it is pretty amazing.

What exactly does 9 years mean?

Well, 9 years ago, Google was still a fledgling company just getting off the ground.  Most people still hadn’t even heard of it yet and it was far from the household name that it is now.

9 years ago, the release of Star Wars Episode 1 was still a few months off and we were still innocent of how bad new movies in the Star Wars universe could be.

9 years ago, the Pentium 2 was available for desktop PC’s, but the standard PC was still running a Pentium 1.

9 years ago, Windows 95 was the standard OS most people used as Windows 98 was still buggy and undergoing massive overhauls.

9 years ago, 512 mb of RAM in a single desktop PC was considered “beefy” and machines of that calibur were largely reserved for applications such as CAD.

9 years ago, if you had a 17 inch CRT monitor at home, you were considered a serious gamer.  If you had a 19 inch CRT monitor at home, you had too much money.

In March 1999, Everquest is launched.  What else happened that month?

On March 21, Shakespeare in Love wins Best Picture at the Academy Awards.

On March 22, Jack Kevorkian goes on trial for murder.

Around the same time?

April 18, Wayne Gretzky plays his final NHL game.

April 20, Columbine High School shooting.

May 5, Microsoft released Windows 98 SE.

June 1, Napster debuts.

June 12, Texas Governor George W Bush announces he will seek the office of President of the United States.

June 19, the Dallas Stars defeat the Buffalo Sabres in triple overtime in game 6 of the Stanley Cup Finals to win their first Stanley Cup.

June 21, Apple releases the first iBook.

July 16, John F. Kennedy Jr dies when his plane crashes off the coast of Martha’s Vineyard.

July 22, Microsoft releases the first version of MSN Messenger.

July 25, Lance Armstrong wins his first Tour de France.

September 9, Sega releases the Dreamcast.

October 27, Yankees complete a 4-game sweep of the Braves to win the World Series.

December 31, Y2K fears pass with barely a whisper.

Obviously, I don’t remember all of these facts.  I’m not that pathetic.  I did a search for 1999 wiki and just copied a few that stood out.

The point being… there are few things that last for 9 years.  Hell, I remember when I was a child sitting in my 3rd grade class room, I couldn’t even fathom the 9 more years it would take before I would be a senior in high school.

Love it or hate it, look back on it fondly or with bitterness, there is something special about the world of Everquest.  Look at all the things that have come and gone and all the changes that have taken place in the last 9 years.

For a game that few people thought would last a year, this is pretty amazing.

Congrats to Sony and the Everquest team past and present on a great accomplishment.

Nyquil = giggle

Sorry for 2 days of no posting.  Been basically bedridden since Monday night.  The little cold I had been fighting since Saturday launched a counter-attack on me and put me down for the count.

I spent the last 2 days in bed.  I got up for short stretches to drink some water, but that was it.  My ass was camped under the covers either sleeping or reading.  An occasional slug on the Nyquil bottle ensured that plenty of sleep was had.

I’m still not back to 100%, but I’m getting better.  The resperatory infection is nearly gone as is the ear infection.  My sinuses are still going crazy, but they aren’t hurting too badly any longer.

I figure to plod through work today and tomorrow as best I can and then spend a lot of time sleeping again this weekend.  Hopefully by Monday, I’ll be back to normal again.
